The Andean YACON
(Smallanthus sonchifolius syn. Polymnia sonchifolia)
* Regulates the glucose level
* Reduce cholesterol
* Stress Killer
* Reduce High Blod
The root contains 86-90% water and only traces of protein and lipids. It is high in oligofructose (also called fructo-oligosaccharide), a dietary sugar, which the human body does not metabolize, hence its potential use for diabetics and in body weight control. Moreover, increased intake of oligofructose has been associated with improved gut health because of the stimulation of (beneficial) bifidus bacteria in the colon.
Yacon has been used for diabetes for thousand years, dried Yacon green leaves are available now as a herbal tea and is specially suggested because their hypoglycemic properties.
Yacon is more productive as an insulin source. Yacon root carbohydrates can be readily metabolized by ruminants but the palatability of the leaves is believed to be low. Stems have been reported to contain 11% protein by dry weight and the leaves 17% protein.
The Hypoglycemic activity of the Yacon has been demonstrated in the water extract of dried Yacon leaves, feeding rats with induced diabetes (Volpato et al. 1997).
Yacon is also well known as APPETITE SUPPRESSANT. Take a cup of Yacon tea - 20 minutes before meals (3 x day), after one months it is noticeable appetite decrease and reduced weight. Yacon is said to be similar in action to insulin it helps to regulate glucose level.
YACON. tuberous roots have a sweet flavor and are crunchy to eat, like traditional fruit.
They are eaten raw, usually after being dried in the sun, which increases their sweetness, by partly hydrolyzing oligofructans, producing fructose, glucose and sucrose.
Medicinal (antidiabetic) properties have been attributed to yacon leaves (Kakihara et al. 1996).
Contents:
Several carbohydrates are stored in the yacon: fructose, glucose, sucrose, low polymerization degree (DP) oligosaccharides (DP 3 to 10 fructans), and traces of starch and inulin (Asami et al. 1989; Ohyama et al. 1990). Oligofructans with a lower DP (average 4.3) may account for up to 67% of the dry matter content at harvest (Asami et al. 1991). Oligosaccharides purified from yacon have been identified as beta-(2 1)-fructooligosaccharides with terminal sucrose (inulin type oligofructans; Goto et al. 1995).
Commonly consumed by diabetees and persons suffering from digestive problems.
Properties to treat kidney problems and skin-rejuvenating activity also have been mentioned.

If you are one of the 17 million diabetics or one of tens of millions pre diabetics in this country or know of someone who is, I urge you to forward this newsletter to them so they can get started using Yacon.

YACON
(Smallanthus sonchifolius syn. Polymnia sonchifolia)
Chemical properties:
Several carbohydrates are stored in the roots of yacon: fructose, glucose, sucrose, low polymerization degree (DP) oligosaccharides (DP 3 to 10 fructans), and traces of starch and inulin (Asami et al. 1995).
Uses:
Commonly consumed by diabetics and persons suffering from digestive problems.
Properties to treat kidney problems and skin-rejuvenating activity also have been mentioned.
Medicinal (antidiabetic) properties have been attributed to yacon leaves (Kakihara et al. 1996). The dried leaves are used to prepare a medicinal tea. Dried yacon leaves are used in Japan, mixed with common tea leaves. Hypoglycemic activity has been demonstrated in the water extract of dried yacon leaves, feeding rats with induced diabetes (Volpato et al. 1997).
Production of dry chips. In this case yacon tuberous roots are peeled and cut in thin slices. The slices are first dried in a plastic tunnel, then oven-dried at 60°C (Kakihara et al. 1996). Dried yacon chips can be stored indefinitely.
YACON Products:
tabs or caps
tea bags
Dry root slices
---------------------------------
Yacon constitutes a very promising resource for diet and medicine, because it represents an alternative for patients with diabetes, since the sugars it contains are stored in insulin form; a polymer of fructose or levulose, a sugar with special characteristic in that it is sweeter than glucose, but doesn’t elevate blood sugar, so it doesn’t cause problems for diabetics.
Yacon also reduces the risk of arteriosclerosis associated with resistance to insulin and dislipemia, and has been shown to be effective in feeding hypercaloric disorders, based fundamentally on carbon hydrates. The experimental data show that the oligofructose inhibits the hepatic lipogenesis and consequently they have a hypotrigliceridemic effect.
Yacon reduces the risk of osteoporosis because it improves the breakdown and absorption of calcium in the body, as well as increasing bone density and bone mass.
